Söderhamn is an old industrial district which has undergone dramatic structural changes over the years. The local economy was once dominated by large companies in the forestry industry, but nowadays, small and medium-sized enterprises play an increasingly important role, bringing greater economic diversity to the area.
Government agencies form another new feature of the local economy. These include the Swedish Patent and Registration Office (PRV) and the Premium Pension Authority (PPM).
Forestry companies and related manufacturers continue to play a major role in the local economy. These include StoraEnso, Vallviks Bruk, Arizona Chemical and Eco Log.
