Moving to care home

When your need for care and support becomes so significant that you can no longer live at home, you can apply for a place at a care facility. You apply through the municipality’s care assessment officer, who will assess your needs.

How to Apply

Contact a care assessment officer via phone or e-service:

  • Call the municipality’s customer service at: 0270-750 00.
  • Use the municipality’s e-service (log in with BankID if applying yourself).

Needs Assessment

After submitting your application, a care assessment officer will schedule a home visit to discuss your need for assistance. The application may need to be supplemented with medical documentation. The officer will inform you of any additional documents required for the assessment.

Decision

The care assessment officer will evaluate and determine whether you qualify for a place in a special housing unit according to the Social Services Act (SoL). The decision is based on your current needs at the time of application. You cannot apply in advance for future needs.

If Your Application Is Approved

You will be offered a place when an available unit that meets your needs becomes free. You cannot choose which care facility you are placed in.

If Your Application Is Denied

The decision will include information on how to appeal the ruling.

Offer

It is difficult to predict how long it will take before you receive an offer for housing. The wait can range from a few weeks to several months. However, it is important that you are prepared to move as soon as an offer is made.

Verbal Offer from Housing Coordinator

When you receive a housing offer, you must provide a verbal confirmation within five days (counting from the day the housing coordinator makes the offer).

You may also confirm with the unit manager during an apartment viewing.

You will have the opportunity to visit the care facility before making a decision.

If you do not respond within five days, the housing coordinator will follow up to ensure a decision is made.

  • If you decline the housing offer, the decision will be revoked, and you will need to reapply through a care assessment officer.
  • If you are staying in a temporary care facility and decline an offered place, you must return to your original residence. You cannot remain in temporary housing.

Moving In

The move-in date and time will be coordinated with you, your relative, or legal representative and the unit manager of the care facility. Move-in should take place within five days of the offer. The rental contract starts as soon as the apartment is ready for occupancy.

Since the process moves quickly, it is important to start preparing for your move as soon as you receive an approved place. Consider who can assist with your move and what belongings you wish to bring.

Fees

All residents in a care facility pay rent and fees for basic services and care. Additional costs may include consumables and hygiene packages.

A meal subscription is available for all meals.
