Recycling and Waste Management

Here you can find information on how to handle your waste in the most environmentally friendly way possible.

In Söderhamn, the municipal company Söderhamn NÄRA is responsible for collecting, processing, and recycling household waste in the municipality. The company also manages bulk waste, electrical waste, and hazardous waste from both households and businesses.

Together with our customers, we strive to reduce waste and promote recycling for a sustainable future.

As an individual, you contribute by sorting your waste, allowing it to be recycled or reused.

No waste is trash – when sorted correctly, waste becomes a resource that can be reused, turned into materials for new products, or converted into energy. We all have a shared responsibility to reduce waste and maximize its use as a resource for a more sustainable future.

Together, we make a difference!

  • Can someone else use what you no longer need? Sell or donate it for reuse.
  • Sort food waste into a food waste bag and place it in the food waste bin.
  • Sort packaging, newspapers, and batteries and deposit them in recycling stations or at Långtå Recycling Center.
  • Sort hazardous waste and take it to Långtå Recycling Center.
  • Dispose of medicine at a pharmacy.
  • The remaining waste (non-recyclable) should be placed in a bag in the residual waste bin.

Waste Management Subscription

If you own a property, house, or holiday home in Söderhamn Municipality where waste is generated, you must have a waste management subscription.

Proper waste sorting reduces both your environmental footprint and your waste management costs, as waste fees are designed to encourage better sorting.

Shared Waste Subscription for Property Owners

Up to three property owners can share a waste collection subscription for food and residual waste.

All subscribers pay a base fee, and the waste collection fee is split equally among them.

The waste bins are placed at Property Owner #1's location, who will be the main account holder and contact person for Söderhamn Nära.

Conditions for Sharing a Subscription:

  • The properties must have the same type of subscription (food waste/home compost/year-round/holiday home).
  • The properties must be located near each other.
  • The waste must fit within the standard bin size for small homes/holiday homes.
  • Personal information on page two must be fully completed.
  • Property owners must inform Söderhamn Nära of any changes, such as ownership transfers. If ownership changes, the shared subscription ends, and a new application is required. If no new application is submitted on time, each property will be assigned its own individual subscription.
