Voting in Municipal Elections and the European Parliament Elections

Here you can learn how voting works in municipal elections in Söderhamn Municipality and elections to the European Parliament. If you are unable to go to the polling station, a mobile voting officer can assist you.

Municipal council elections are held every four years. The next election will take place in 2026.

You have the right to vote in the municipal council election if you are:

  • At least 18 years old on election day,
  • A Swedish citizen and registered as a resident in the municipality, or
  • A citizen of an EU member state, Iceland, or Norway and registered as a resident in the municipality, or
  • A citizen of a country other than those mentioned above, or stateless, and have been registered as a resident in Sweden for three consecutive years before election day, as well as being registered as a resident in the municipality.

Voting Card

You must have a voting card to vote. If you are eligible to vote, a voting card will be sent to your home.

Elections to the European Parliament are held every five years. The next election will take place in 2029.

To vote in the EU election, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old on election day,
  • Be a Swedish citizen who is or has been registered as a resident in Sweden, or
  • Be an EU citizen, registered as a resident in Sweden, and enrolled in the Swedish electoral roll no later than 30 days before election day.

Voting Card

Everyone eligible to vote in the EU election in Sweden and listed in the electoral roll will receive a voting card by mail. The voting card states which electoral district you belong to, the address of your polling station, and its opening hours.

Different Ways to Vote

  • Vote at a Polling Station on Election Day
    All polling stations are accessible with elevators and ramps for wheelchairs and walkers. It is possible to vote in advance at a designated voting location, known as advance voting. Advance voting takes place several weeks before election day. You can vote in advance at any voting location across the country. To vote in advance, you must bring your voting card and ID.

  • Mobile Voting Officers
    If you are unable to visit a polling station due to illness, age, or disability and do not have anyone who can vote on your behalf, your municipality can arrange for a mobile voting officer.
    Mobile voting means that an election official comes to your home or another location where you are to collect your vote. Your vote will be prepared in the same way as an advance vote at a voting station.

  • Voting from Outside Sweden
    If you are abroad during the election, you can vote from abroad. You can either vote by mail or vote in advance at an embassy or consulate.
